September: SAWG-PGWNet conference
After
some deliberations, executives of SAWG and PGWNet adopted the
2005 Commonwealth
Day theme and adapted the IFUW action points as the subthemes
for
the SAWG-PGWnet 2005 conference.
Theme:
Creating opportunity and realizing
potential
and
4 subthemes:
ICT
for empowerment
Education-
relevance is the key
Reconciliation
- a means for peace
Health
- a Pacific focus
Keynote
speakers were drawn from leaders in the four subthemes and the
first to confirm
was Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, Chair, National Reconciliation Committee
of
Fiji
(and President of FAWG). The main keynote address was expected
to be delivered
by Hon Don McKinnon, Commonwealth Secretary General - but this
did not
come to pass and the conference opening address was combined
with the keynote
address delivered by Hon Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, Prime
Minister of Samoa.
The
conference dates were selected to coincide with the Samoa Teuila
festival which focuses
on cultural presentations, performances and displays - and this
added to the conference
events. This is also the end of the dry season and the weather
is normally cool
and pleasant.
Detailed
information may be obtained from the Conference
circular.
